How to install an eSIM on iPhone
iOS Configuration Guide
You can install your eSIMtime plan in a few minutes. Do it before you travel, while you are connected to Wi-Fi: installation needs an internet connection.
Before you start
- Check that your iPhone supports eSIM. iPhone XS, XR and newer models do.
- Make sure your iPhone is not carrier-locked. A locked phone only works with the operator it was bought from, and the eSIM will not connect.
- Connect to Wi-Fi. Installation fails without an internet connection.
Install with the QR code
After you buy a plan, we send you an email with your QR code. You can also see it in your account.
- Open Settings and tap Cellular (Mobile Data in some regions).
- Tap Add eSIM, then Use QR Code.
- Scan the QR code from your email. You can also scan it with the Camera app and tap the Cellular Plan notification.
- Tap Continue and wait for the plan to be added.
- Give the plan a label, for example "eSIMtime travel", so you can tell your lines apart.
- Choose your main line for calls and messages, and choose the eSIM for Cellular Data.
Install by entering the details manually
If the QR code does not scan, you can type in the details instead. The SM-DP+ address and activation code are in your email and in your account.
- Open Settings, tap Cellular, then Add eSIM.
- Tap Use QR Code, then Enter Details Manually.
- Enter the SM-DP+ address and the activation code, then tap Next.
Turn on data roaming
Your eSIM uses partner networks abroad, so data roaming must be on for it to work. This does not add charges to your eSIMtime plan.
- Open Settings and tap Cellular.
- Tap your eSIMtime plan.
- Turn on Data Roaming.
When you arrive
Your iPhone can keep your main SIM and the eSIM installed at the same time, and you can switch each line on or off in Settings > Cellular.
Turn off your main line before you reach the border. Near a border your phone can pick up a foreign network even before you cross, and your home operator may charge roaming for it.
Some networks take up to 10 minutes to register a new eSIM. If you have no connection after that, restart your iPhone and check the APN settings.
